COMMUNITY GARDENS
The burst of color you see at the end of Eric Street is the Bishop
Grandin Greenway Community gardens. The gardens were funded by Vital -
St. Boniface Rotary. This first year, the gardens were planted by the
St. Vital Seniors, St. Vital Agriculture Society and the Grade 3 & 4’s
from Victor Mager school. A large variety of fruits and vegetables were
planted. The wooden beds were painted by the Dakota Collegiate Grade 11
art class. A brilliant design of colors and patterns wrap around each of
the beds. A HUGE thank you to the VERY artistic students! Already there
is interest in adding additional beds for next year. If you are
interested in the gardens, contact Lenore Linton @ 237- 5703.
Winnipeg Arts Council - June 6th, 2009 Unveiling
(see events)

In early Spring of 2008, The Winnipeg Arts Council awarded two Canadian
artists $86,000 to create a piece of permanent artwork to be integrated
into the Bishop Grandin Greenway. Murray Gibson, President of Bishop
Grandin Greenway Inc. and Christina Harris, City of Winnipeg Urban
Designer sat on advisory committee to work with the artists throughout
the development process. The artwork is environmentally-based,
ecologically sensitive and compliments the recreational and natural
focus of the Greenway.

Members of Bishop Grandin Greenway Inc. have seen drawings and a
miniature version of the artwork and are thrilled with the results. We
don’t have any photos of the artwork yet - but here is a hint as to the
theme! The artwork will be located near the west pond - watch the local
paper for an unveiling date late October.

In June of 2008, the Grade 3 students at Victor Mager School, with the
help of Conservation Manitoba planted a Butterfly Sanctuary on the
Greenway. With the advice of Monarch Watch (www.monarchwatch.org), an
international Monarch conservation organization at the University of
Kansas, students planted both food for the Monarch caterpillars and high
nectar plants for those that will make the journey south. Victor Mager
School hopes the Greenway will be designated an International Monarch
Waystation and will help these Marathon runners of the insect world make
a safe journey to and from Mexico for years to come.
ECO EDUCATION CENTRE
Watch for the Eco Education interpretive panel to be installed this spring.
An interactive panel highlighting some of the habitat and
creatures of nature found on Bishop Grandin Greenway is being designed
by award winning interpreter Sherry Dangerfield. The interpretive panel
will help people of all ages gain a better understanding and
appreciation of the significance and uniqueness of the area. A large
limestone seating area will also be installed to encourage visitor to
stop, relax and enjoy their surroundings.
